The Profit Zone Key to Telling the Web You Exist

Search Engine Secrets Revealed

Did you know that over 100,000 websites are created every month? With that many sites coming online, one way to get your site the exposure it deserves is to register it with as many search engines and search directories as possible. But how do you position your site at the TOP of the search engine results?

There are several strategies you can use when you need maximum "find-ability" for your website. But first, let's define what a search engine is as opposed to a search directory:

  • Search Engines are similar to a card catalog for the Internet. It categorizes and searches websites based on keyword or concept. This is all done by computer so it's easy to fool... A typical search engine on the Internet is Excite.

  • Search Directories categorize websites by subject and presents them according to relevancy based on what you enter on the search field. Some, like Yahoo, are manned by real people who are hard to fool!
IMPORTANT NOTE: If the computers or the people at the search engines think you are trying to fool them, they will delete your listing and not allow you back on until you clean up your act.

Search engines are constantly changing the way they categorize sites. Therefore, this information may not be exact but at least you will get an idea as to what to focus your attention on.

Secrets for Successful Submissions

Secret #1: "Page Titles are ad copy... Write them like a headline!"

The page title is the title that appears on the top of your browser. It also becomes the ad copy for your link when people discover you in a search engine or link list. It is critical that you use a headline as your title. All search engines look at the title except Alta Vista... They is obsessed with it! Your title should be a headline with your biggest benefit, keywords, and possibly your company name if it will fit.

Secret #2: "Take full advantage of Meta Tags."

In your page code there is a command to include a Meta Description File which should be a two or three sentence description of your site. It will look like this:

meta name="description" VALUE="Your description here"

There is also a command to include a Meta Keyword File. Focus in on one or two keywords that describe what your business does. The source will look like this:

meta name="keywords" CONTENT="Your keywords separated by commas here"

Create a Meta description file and keyword file for each page of your website.

Secret #3: "Reregister with the top search engines every 30 to 60 days."

These top search engines are Alta Vista, Infoseek, Lycos, Excite, Yahoo and Web Crawler. You should do these individually and when you do, try changing your title ever so slightly so the search engines think it's a new page. (You'll get more duplicate listings this way.) Also, register individual pages (especially content pages) when you reregister your home page.

The Big Six

Here's how each of the big six search engines currently act with regard to what they can index:

  • Excite: Ignores Meta Tags and has the ability to determine visible areas of a website. Indexes the first 200 visible words.

  • Lycos: Uses a combination of Meta Tags, Title, and page text focusing on the first 300 words.

  • Alta Vista: Uses a combination of Meta Tags, Title, and page text focusing on the first 200 words. If there is no Meta Tags, uses Title and the first 30 words of page text as keywords.

  • Yahoo: Searches for keywords based on Meta Tags and what you enter when registering. A human will view your site before you are listed and if they notice that you are overusing unrelated keywords, they may reject your submission.

  • Infoseek: Uses a combination of Meta Tags, Title, and page text focusing on the first 200 characters. Allows up to a 200 word Meta description and has the ability to determine any "overabundance" of repetition in Meta Tags and page text. Deletes listings that try to trick the computers.

  • Web Crawler: Indexes your entire site and searches keywords for duplication. Focuses on the first 300 words of page text with less weight given to words down the page.
